Freedman's

Better Late Than Never!

Freedman's Bar ~~ July 15, 2017

Barbeqrew hit up Freedman's about a month ago and it was my first Texas Monthly BBQ experience where I didn't throw up or get hives.. yay!! Most noteworthy was the 'Holy Mary,' a $24 bloody mary in a pint glass served with three different kinds of meat skewered on the top. Who doesn't love getting drunk on a mary while chowing down on ribs, brisket and sausage!!!??

Holy Mary feat. shameless 'que lovers in the background

While on the topic of noteworthy alcohol at top-of-the-line BBQ joints, who could pass up a whiskey flight on Satruday morning after a long night of drinking. Not me, because mama raised me right. Obviously I ordered this whiskey flight to go along with my delish sliced brisket sandwich!!

As our waiter set down the flight, I realized I was in for more than I bargained, after never having a whiskey flight before, the 'qrew laughed at me, and Maddie dared me to take each one as a shot, going against the recommendation of the bartender. Because I obviously didn't know what I was doing here, the bartender gave me a full run-down of how to approach this flight and how to get the most flavor out of the whiskey. I quickly tuned out her spiel, not having the attention span or interest to really listen. The only thing I really heard was to use the little pipet to drip small quantities of water into the shots until the whiskey was bearable.... GREAT. Good start, Rita.

Anyways, I did the shots and hated each one of them but maybe next time I'll actually listen to the instructions... maybe.

Chopped brisket sandy was SUPERB. Beans and house-made pickles were outstanding as well.

Definitely don't pas up this stop, super easy location in West Campus with great indoor and outdoor vibes!! Goals are to continue the trend of not throwing up or not having an adverse physical reaction of any kind after by BBQ adventures! Holy Mary is a one of a kind experience, unmatched by any other drink I have come across so far, and, believe you me, I've been looking far and wide.

More Barbeqrew outings to come soon! Hopefully it won't take me a month to write the next post :)
